Top gun: Maverick (2022)

I watched Top Gun and Top Gun: Let There Be Another One 40 Years Later in one day, which I feel was the absolute optimal way to experience this movie. I really enjoyed this, I left the cinema buzzing which is always a sign of a good movie. If you saw the original Top Gun I'd recommend giving this one the time of day. I'm going to say this is a 8/10, it's the ultimate dudes rock movie of 2022 and you can just tell the people who made this love Top Gun. SPOILERS TURN YA PLANE UPSIDE DOWN IF YOU WANT TO AVOID SPOILERS So I made a lot of fun of the original Top Gun in my review of it, mainly because it's old. Top Gun (2022) feels the same way as me, and spends the beginning of the film just roasting Maverick. It's like man you suck and you're old and you killed a goose and you have no money for everyone's beers GET OUT! Here to really drive the guilt train is Miles Teller as Gooses son, he's utterly fantastic. Really such a great actor, I have so much time f...

Top Gun (1986)

So in preparation for Top Gun: Maverick, I though I better see Top Gun: The Old One. From the synthy music playing over the intro I knew this was the most 80s movie to ever 80s and I was pretty damn excited. SPOILERS FOR THIS 40 YEAR OLD MOVIE! It's truly wild how Tom Cruise still looks the way he does, a perfect combination of skincare, surgery, Scientology I assume. The music is absolutely banging in this. Using Highway To The Danger Zone is just awesome and you cannot overstate how good the sound effects, music and original score is for Top Gun. It all feels unbelievably real as a result of the sound. The opening scene with Cougar being thoroughly shook up is brilliant, it's great to contrast how cool under pressure Maverick is with someone who's cage has been completely rattled by what they do as fighter pilots. It makes the threat real because if everyone was cool as hell you wouldn't care about any of it. There's a surprising sexual undertone going on, not sur...

Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)

Okay so this is the first piece of Downton Abbey content I've ever seen and I had so much fun with it I cannot stop laughing. So this is all gonna be spoilers so if you want to see this don't read any of my review. Downton Abbey (A New and Proper Posh Era) is like a 6/10 and if you watched all the series you probably adored this and it's like a 9/10 for you. Alright here we go so first of all I absolutely love a hoyty toyty English set of humans. Oh how I adore it, it's so funny to me. They're all so polite but also massively impolite as well. Like to me it's so rude to have someone in your home and be like "alright see ya later I WILL SUMMON THE BUTLER TO ESCORT YOU OUT". Bro just walk them out yourself the poor butler is busy butling on the other side of the house! So they telegraph pretty early to the audience that Maggie Smith is toast. From the perspective of someone that has never seen any Downton Abbey content I don't get why people are sa...

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)

You know I nearly broke my streak of seeing everything to not see this film. I'm not going to pretend I'm some morally righteous person, I've seen films made by or involving worse people than JK Rowling. That being said, this kinda sucks. She deserves a lot of credit for coming up with a fascinating world in Harry Potter, but let's be honest, the story within that amazing world is nothing exceptional. For example, Quidditch as a sport makes 0 sense. The snitch is 150 points and ends the game? What's the point in all the other stuff then? Also you can just knock other players out with weapons? This game is dangerous and absurd and dumb! Just do a wizard version of footy or something! And there's this weird relationship with sex and race and all this stuff that runs through these books. Rowling just took to Twitter and declared Dumbledore gay when people pointed out there are no gay people in this world, diversity is shoved in via weird and odd choices. Cho Chan...

The Bad Guys (2022)

This is one of those movies where I was like, okay I see everything but I really need to make sure I wait until the screenings of this are dead. Because a mid 20s man going to see this on his own is an odd look. That being said, I had a decent time with this! It's a bit paint by numbers, I feel like I've seen this exact film 10,000 times, but the 10,001st time was still enjoyable enough. The twist(s) are insanely predictable and tipped, to the point where I wonder if they even considered them twists, because the film doesn't make a huge deal of the reveals. I mean one of them it milks a bit, but the other it just kind of goes, well yeah (look I'll just say no prizes for guessing who "The Crimson Paw" is). Kids movies are odd to review, you can't exactly hold them to the same standards as other films but then again they surely don't all get a free pass? I guess I'll just focus on are the enjoyable and do they have good lessons for kids, by those m...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Doctor Strange is back and can you believe just how much hand waving he's doing? It's so much hand waving! This movie is a fun movie, it's fast-paced (maybe a little too fast?) But is really just a good time. It's definitely a fridge movie though. What's a fridge movie I hear you ask? A fridge movie is when you watch a movie, and in the moment everything makes sense, but then you wake up at midnight, you're a lil hungry, so you go to the fridge and open it up to get yourself a lil snack, but then something randomly comes into your brain that makes you go "wait a minute..." And you realise that movie you watched earlier had some holes in it. Not that I'm some kind of plothole hunter, honestly amazing stories and movies have them and they shouldn't detract from the experience unless they're really egregious. I do however think there are some character motivation things in this that really do leave you wondering what's going on with some p...

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Sonic is back baby! Remember how everyone in the world thought the first Sonic movie was gonna suck? I know I certainly did, from that disastrous first trailer (remember creepy Sonic with small eyes?) to the absolutely torrid history of video game movies (remember Assassins Creed? Tomb Raider?), I think we were all geared up for a bad time. But then things started looking better, Twitter cyber bullied the studio into bullying animators (sorry guys) to fix Sonics look, and then we remembered some not bad to good video game movies (Detective Pikachu!). We all started getting a little excited, and when our blue friend hit cinemas I know I was kinda hyped. And it was decent! It wasn't incredible, it wasn't ground breaking, but it didn't embarass itself! I'm calling that first Sonic movie an absolute win. Carrey was good as Eggman, it all worked and was actually kinda sweet. It did well enough to warrant a sequel, and here it is. So did they manage to get a second passing ...

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)

What an odd duck of a movie. I'm not even sure how to review this thing. I mean, it's good, it's entertaining, it's well written (mostly), it's well acted, it's well directed, but I can't think of any friend or family member I'd recommend this film to. Right off the bat I'll say Cage and Pascal are an incredible duo, this film is at its absolute best when these two actors are playing off each other. The third act let's the whole thing down, but if you're a Cage fan this film is obviously worth it. If you're a film fan I'd recommend this too, there's a lot of discussion about Hollywood and the nature of acting and movies in this movie. I'm going to give it a 7/10, but an odd duck 7/10. 🦆 SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Alright so if you're here you either saw it or have no intention of seeing this odd duck, normally I assume people reading at this point saw the movie but I sincerely think a lot of p...
