Sonic is back baby! Remember how everyone in the world thought the first Sonic movie was gonna suck? I know I certainly did, from that disastrous first trailer (remember creepy Sonic with small eyes?) to the absolutely torrid history of video game movies (remember Assassins Creed? Tomb Raider?), I think we were all geared up for a bad time.
But then things started looking better, Twitter cyber bullied the studio into bullying animators (sorry guys) to fix Sonics look, and then we remembered some not bad to good video game movies (Detective Pikachu!). We all started getting a little excited, and when our blue friend hit cinemas I know I was kinda hyped.
And it was decent! It wasn't incredible, it wasn't ground breaking, but it didn't embarass itself! I'm calling that first Sonic movie an absolute win. Carrey was good as Eggman, it all worked and was actually kinda sweet.
It did well enough to warrant a sequel, and here it is. So did they manage to get a second passing grade?
It's certainly closer this time round. Expectations were higher, and I'm going to be honest Sonic 2 is a step down from that first movie. But I'm not ready to call it an abject failure either.
Sonic gets his friend Tails, and Eggman gets Knuckles the Echinda, it's a new conflict with new characters all adding to this world, that in turn make it a little messy.
Knuckles looks pretty good, but to me the animation for Tails just didn't look quite right, I don't know what it is, he looks a little grubby? Like the yellow is slightly off colour and I don't like it! Although as the movie goes on I feel like he looks better, maybe it's just me getting used to it?
Before going into spoilers I'll say Sonic 2 is passable, but nothing more. It's just a movie, and a bit of a let down if I'm honest. It's too long and a lot could have been cut out, especially for a film targeted at kids.
It's a 4/10, lacking the heart and laughs of the first film. Also there's a post credits to tease a third film that I am not so sure will go ahead- will discuss in spoiler time!
SONIC SPOILERS GOTTA GO FAST TO SPOILER TIME!
So this movie starts out so good I was so excited. We get this amazing opening with Eggman on the mushroom planet he was cast off to and it's hilarious, with Carrey really at his best. Then we catch up with Sonic and he's so full of energy, Sonic really is so cute it's actually really sweet.
When Tails joins the party is sadly when things start to go wrong. I mean, I love when Knuckles just kicks Sonics head in, it really shows Sonic has no idea how to actually use his powers so when meeting someone with similar strength he gets wrecked. That being said, Tails and Sonic don't really feel like they ever become best mates, they just suddenly are. The dance battle scene is pretty cringey and lacks much humour, my cinema was full and I heard no laughter at all... That's not good, and for this to work we need to buy Sonic and Tails as best mates.
Carrey might be given too much rope to improvise, or the script is inconsistent, because he definitely doesn't land all his jokes at all and needs to pull it back in some places.
As I said earlier, this movie is wayyy too long. Over 2 hours for Sonic? What're we doing here. And let me tell you, this movie has a lot of fat that you can cut. Everything after Sonic is captured after the wedding can be cut until his escape- in fact him being captured was pointless too! Why bother? Just to introduce G.U.N? No one cares about them at all and they do nothing in this movie so why bother? That probably could've saved us 10 minutes.
Quick thought- was that snowboarding down the mountain a reference to the game Sonic Riders on PS2? I played the crap out the game, though I think this is a coincidence as it wasn't popular and I think my brain is just connecting dots that aren't there... Speaking of which, when Eggman at the end says "there are good people on both sides", was that a reference to Trump when he said that about the blue lives matter people? I'm sure that's the exact phrase he used. Mental if so.
Also did Sonic attempt to murder Eggman at the end? That blue little bitch is cold if so.
Alright so final thing to say is that post credits to tease Shadow the Hedgehog was possibly pointless as I'm not sure this thing is successful enough to get a third movie. Maybe I'm gonna be proven wrong, but I'm not sure. Shadow also has too cute eyes, he needs to have them be a little narrower if he will work- look it's neither here nor there.
Quite funny though as I bet kids have no idea who Shadow even is, his game came out when I was like 10 so who will care? I mean, I guess I care, I loved that game, and man I want to hear that intro song again (I AM ALL OF ME!!) but then again I'm an adult man now so do I care? Who are these movies for? Me or kids? Kids don't like Sonic he's not had a good game in forever, and I don't care because I'm an adult.
Although I saw this movie and have written a review so maybe I do care. I dunno.
I'm a bit sad because I wish this had been more heartfelt, with a clearer message for kids and failing that just make it funnier. I fear this is the last Sonic movie, and the Shadow post credit tease will look pretty embarassing in hindsight.
