That being said, I had a decent time with this! It's a bit paint by numbers, I feel like I've seen this exact film 10,000 times, but the 10,001st time was still enjoyable enough.
The twist(s) are insanely predictable and tipped, to the point where I wonder if they even considered them twists, because the film doesn't make a huge deal of the reveals. I mean one of them it milks a bit, but the other it just kind of goes, well yeah (look I'll just say no prizes for guessing who "The Crimson Paw" is).
Kids movies are odd to review, you can't exactly hold them to the same standards as other films but then again they surely don't all get a free pass? I guess I'll just focus on are the enjoyable and do they have good lessons for kids, by those merits this movie is reasonably fun with some well paced and actually quite fun action/heist scenes, but the moral lessons are confused and mucky as hell. The jokes mostly land but there's not tons of jokes actually.
Standout performance is easily Richard Ayoade, he is born to voice act. Akwafina is also great, and Sam Rockwell is brilliant too. Anthony Ramos is constantly teasing the awesome pipes we all know he has and when you finally get his big song it's really fun, fits the narrative and is just a really good song too. Everyone else is passable but not exceptional.
To summarise, The Bad Guys won't bore you to death if you take your kids, there's some fun to be had but you won't shed any tears and your kids won't be better people because of it. 5/10, it's just a movie.
BAD GUY SPOILERS IF YOU ARE A BAD GUY YOU BETTER DRIVE AWAY FAST
So obviously the red fox governer was gonna be "The Crimson Paw", I mean who else could be?
Ayoade as the evil guinea pig was also insanely obvious. So much foreshadowing! They're constantly like "man look- people, they're not always what you think are they? Some bad people are good and good people are bad, it's crazy, keep that in mind".
I haven't got much more to say here, the driving scenes were really fun and they do a great job showing wolf as a good driver. I loved the fast typing of the tarantula, though I wish they'd cut out fart jokes all the time, I know they're a cheap way to make kids laugh but I never really got why.
I guess farts = funny but it doesn't feel very creative, also why would a piranha fart? He should've been a skunk actually, that character does nothing that's piranha like at all. Then at least the farts would make sense.
It's cool to see heist movies as a genre for kids, and this is totally a fun time. The message is muffled and it basically boils down to being bad is not good, and don't trust people, it kinda says take responsibility for your actions-but the Crimson Paw never does! Can't believe she just got to stay governor. The message is crime doesn't pay, unless you don't get caught and then run for office, in which case it does.
