Operation Mincemeat (2022)

Operation Mincemeat is a fascinating true story about what I genuinely think is one of the wildest things the Allies did in World War Two. The film does a great job of highlighting the significance of just outright lying and BSing the other side during this conflict, it's actually outrageous how much went into it. I think the scariest part is just how close everything is to going wrong, pulling off a deception during WW2 seems like it was exhausting, because everyone's guard was so high you had to not just lie, but build an entire lie world around you. The film is let down by the lack of truly but punch powerful scenes, there's a moment or two that I think with a slight script rewrite, or more powerful acting/direction, would have really made this an exceptional movie. Colin Firth and Kelly MacDonald do a good job, Penelope Wilson does a great job, everyone else gets a passing grade, no one is awful, which is really important for such a significant story as one bad perfor...

Time After Time (2018)

Welcome to part 2 of Dan's romantic film night. This one is a little lighter, though I'm massively biased because it really hits close to home. Asa Butterfield plays Stillman, a guy who has just been dumped and uses this heartbreak as motivation to finish his project of building a time machine. Using this, he decides not to stop Hitler but instead to look back at his broken relationship and fix the moments that went wrong so that his relationship with Debbie (Sophie Turner) never ends. I'd highly recommend this, particularly to anyone that struggles with relationship anxiety, low self-worth, jealousy or is prone to overthinking. It really is film that says "hey, if you could go back and fix all the things that you think are wrong with you, you might not like the results". If I go any further I'll ruin it, so it's spoiler time. 7/10, points deducted for the ending feeling a bit wobbly. TIME TRAVEL SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU GET SPOILT AND WANT TO SEE IT WITHOU...

Five Feet Apart (2019)

Had myself a lovely little night in and watched two romantic films so let's get in to this one first. Five Feet Apart is one of those films that I feel like I would recommend to everyone, it doesn't do anything spectacular, there is no exceptional acting scene (though both our leads do well, and Hayley Lu Richardson in particular deserves a lot of credit), it's competently directed but there are no truly beautiful or breathtaking shots, and it's a good if not basic script. The reason I'd recommend Five Feet Apart to everyone is it sheds light on how challenging living with Cystic Fibrosis can be. I knew nothing of this illness going in, other than a vague idea it affected the lungs. Five Feet Apart is an education not just on the illness, but on the lives those that suffer from it go through. It's incredibly human, raw and honest. After you watch it you'll be a better person with more empathy and compassion. 7/10, does most things right and is worth the ti...

Death On The Nile (2022)

Did you enjoy Murder on the Orient Express? I'm guessing the answer is "yeah kinda", because I have never met anyone that said anything greater than that. Well somehow that film got a sequel, this time taking on Agatha Christie's much less beloved but still heralded as a good murder mystery Death On The Nile. In my opinion this is a rather dramatic step back from Murder on the Orient Express, which already was a fairly average film. This is a tough one to say without spoilers, but all I'll say is we have some actors doing a good job, and then we have Gal Gadot. It's not a good casting, she's not convincing in this role, and her character is so pivotal particularly in the first third of this movie that it really drags the rest of it down. There's also a few moments of really terrible green screen in this, and it just made me ask why? Why not just go and actually film it on location? Is it THAT much more expensive? I mean we are trying to make a decent...

The Batman (2022)

Alright so I saw this a while ago now but honestly my first two reviews were mean and I loved this movie so let's be nice about something. Most of this review has to be in spoiler talk so I'll just very quickly say if you have even a passing interest in Batman GO SEE THIS. Robert Battinson is great, Paul Dano is great, the rest of this all-star cast are great and are given so much to work with. Matt Reeves directs this film and what a job he does. Some of the shots in this film are just incredible, Gotham is a truly grimy, disgusting city and the choice of Glasgow to create this city is perfect (lol sorry Glasgow). It's a rock solid 8/10, maybe a 9. Let's say 8.5/10. SPOILER TIME IT'S BAT-SPOILERS I love how Batman has no fucking clue what he's doing. My best friend didn't love this movie like I did, and I kind of get it, like if you're used to Marvel, Christian Bales Batman, and generally more suave superhero characters it comes as a bit of a shock to...

The Lost City (2022)

The Lost City is boring and I couldn't wait for it to be over. The Lost City is an interesting premise with an amazing cast that is terribly let down by a poor script. It's such a shame, it really is. Because I see potential in the concept for this film, little script decisions along the way derail this whole thing and make it commit the worst crime a film can- it's boring. See, lots of movies are bad, but interesting and bad is a hell of a lot better than boring and average. Spider-Man 3 (Sam Raimis) is bad, but it's definitely not boring. Suicide Squad (2016) is bad, but it's definitely not boring. I'd much rather revisit those trainwrecks than sit through this again. 3/10, seriously don't bother. SPOILERS AHEAD Okay so the biggest issue I have with this script is them killing Brad Pitts character. To me that just made no logical sense and completely killed the momentum of the movie. Yes there was a great shock to it, and I couldn't believe they did ...

Morbius (2022)

Ah Morbius, what a film to start this blog with. So I'm not going to break any ground here when I say that Morbius is bad. It's boring, it feels like it was made in 2002, it's weird and I can't understand what anyone involved at any level was thinking. Don't watch it, it's a 2/10 at best. SPOILERS AHEAD So maybe I missed something but Morbius is like "I'm going to use this injection I've created that kills bats and also humans to kill Matt Smith and then I'll kill myself", he successfully murders Matt Smith but then doesn't murder himself- is there any reason why he didn't do that or did he just change his mind about suicide without telling the audience? Also where the hell does that final fight take place? It's like under the city in an absolutely monstrously sized place, but also the bats that Morbius became mates with earlier can get there? Unless it's different bats? Is the movie implying that Morbius is mates with all b...
