After the Flash (2023) stole my pancreas in the night, Spider-Man All Over the Bloody Place undertook emergency surgery and replaced it for me.
I watched these movies back to back in the cinema like an absolute lunatic, and good lord the contrast was really visible. How to actually make a multiverse movie (Spider-Man) Vs how to break into Dan's house and steal his pancreas (The Floosh).
Spider-Man nails the balance of wow look at all these universe's and oh but let's tell a story that human beings can actually relate to. Gwen's relationship with her father and Miles' relationship with his parents really hits home that sense we all get between wanting to go and be our own people whilst also respecting and being there for the parental figures that love and raise us. Ultimately, Miles thinks he is choosing his father's life over everything, and still can't bear the idea of letting him die. Even if it is a "canon event".
Which is clearly nonsense by the way, Miguel O'Hara is doing a big lie! Because Miles' universe that he stole the spider from is still clearly kicking around! You did a lie! You son of a bitch!
The cameos in this film are so well done and so funny, Peter "Parked Car" made me laugh out loud. It was great to see MCU and Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield kicking around too. It makes sense, it does it right, it's everything the Flash isn't it. And it didn't steal my pancreas.
I kind of don't want to spoil things too much, but it's a great movie and I don't have lots to say other than it's a 9/10. I can't wait for part 2!
So what the hell should I talk about?
Wellll....
All this multiverse stuff has got me thinking, what multiverse concept is best? In the sense of, if it's real, what version do I want?
The Flash version says everything past and present changes multiverse to multiverse, so nothing is locked in place.
No Way Home says there's almost like roles to be filled, Spider-Man exists but is wildly different, but he always has to exist.
The Spider Verse movies say the multiverse has significant changes between universes, but every individual has certain "canon events" that make them who they are, and these events HAVE to happen.
Everything Everywhere All at Once says every version of us is created by significant life choices, but happiness fluctuates greatly, and what really matters is personal fulfillment over success.
Personally, I hope it's the Spider-Verse. Every individual has certain things that are meant to happen that make us, well, us. I'm not Dan if my mam doesn't send me to school with a block of cheese one day. I cease to be me. Or maybe I just like mini cheddars a bit more. Who's to say?
