Good heavens, what a Shrekingly good time I just had at the cinema! The latest Puss in Boots is way better than it has any right to be, where do I start? Okay so this is a simple little find the thing romp, it starts with a little story saying hey you can get a wish if you find this thing, here’s a map, let’s go. And then Dreamworks smashes it out the park by giving us legitimately well-written, funny characters all in pursuit of this wish. I’ll save more on them in spoiler time, but I just want to say I love Puss so much, is absolute arrogance, the cute little cat stuff always gets me like when he plays with balls of string and drinks milk and stuff, it’s just so good.
The animation is awesome, they do that whole Spider-Verse animation during combat where it kind of looks like a moving comic book combined with regular animation, it’s visually interesting and just super cool. But my highest praise goes to the main villain of this film, good lord what a villain, I didn’t expect the hairs on my little arms to stand up in the Puss in Boots film, but they really did when that wolf was on screen. Look, just see this movie, its great fun, I’m not gonna say any more than that before spoiler time, it’s a 9/10 and I can’t wait to see more of this little ginger boy.
SPOILER TIME BOYS IT’S A KITTY KAT WITH A SWORD SPOILER TIME
Alright so death, actual death, is the villain of this movie. The little segment where Puss explains how he lost 8 of his 9 lives is hilarious and is then followed up with an absolutely spine-chilling scene where Death scares Puss and me, I feel bad for kids who see this movie because I don’t think I got a WINK of sleep last night after seeing that. Every time he whistled that little melody I felt the mood of the cinema shift, that is SO hard to do with a villain, especially in a kids movie, bravo Dreamworks, you nailed it. And he STAYS scary too, even in his defeat, he is still a threat, I love what they did with this so much. I’m inspired to make a D&D villain based on this guy, what a legend.
The other characters are also great, you get a straight up rude and bad guy in Jack Horner that brings some laughs, and a legitimately little heart wrenching story with Goldilocks and the three bears. Can you believe this movie handles the issues of adoption and the challenge adopted kids face in wanting to connect with their birth family whilst not betraying their adopted family?
Oh, and then there’s the little doggo Burrito, who is all jokes at first but then has a great little role in reminding everyone that life should be about seeing the beauty in everything and staying optimistic. No one has been through more than Burrito, yet he’s still a positive little pup, it’s legitimately inspiring. There is two absolute comedy gold moments where he effectively just swears a bunch but it’s bleeped out, that is just hilarious and great to have stuff for the adults in there, there is a lot of jokes just for the adults in this movie that are just great.
It was nice to see Kitty Softpaws again, who gets probably less to do than everyone else, but she gets a nice little romance with Puss and learning to trust and all that jazz.
This hasn’t been a review so much as me just gushing about this movie, I won’t apologise, I had such a good time. The movie ends with Puss returning to Far Far Away and I don’t know about you but I am now full of confidence that the return of Shronk is not going to be a mess. Dreamworks, I trust you, don’t let me down. And PLEASE bring death back for more, what a villain. I loved this movie, can you tell?
